The morning sun had barely risen over Neversink Mountain when Ken left the office and crossed the parking lot. He felt like shit. His head pounded and did his grogginess no favors. It was Saturday, so the parking lot was empty. There was no one to see the disheveled and disoriented figure plodding to his car after a night of huffing nitrous oxide. No one to ask him why he wasn’t home with his wife and baby. No one to tell him he looked as shitty as he felt. No one to tell him he was as shitty as he felt.

He pulled out of the lot after looking left and right for other cars. Had he looked straight ahead at the upper parking lot of the office complex on the other side of the service road, he might have noticed the woman sitting behind the wheel of her Honda Civic, tapping her orange fingernails on the dashboard and watching him with interest.
